Suburb only
Your address is never on Garage. A buyer sees the suburb, and a map circle drawn about 500 m in every direction from the middle of it, not from you.
Photos forget where they were
Cameras write the location into the photo file. Yours is re-encoded on your phone before it uploads, which takes that out before it ever leaves the device.
No numbers swapped
Nothing here hands over a phone number. If one changes hands, it's because you sent it.
We never hold the money
Payment goes from the buyer to the seller. Garage is never in the middle of it, and never keeps a delivery address.
Reporting and blocking
Every listing, profile and conversation has a report button. You block someone from their profile, or from your conversation with them. A block needs no report and works straight away.
Meet somewhere public, in daylight. See the thing before you pay for it. And trust your gut; we’d rather you lose a sale than a wallet.
Every listing, profile and conversation carries a report button. What happens after you use one:
- Reports are private. The person you report is never told that a report exists, or who made it.
- A person in Melbourne reads it, through the same queue as bug reports and messages sent from the contact page.
- Blocking is separate. It stops contact both ways, straight away, and needs no report.
- Do I need an account to report or block someone?
- Yes, you need to be signed in for both. It means there is an account behind every report, which is what stops the queue filling with anonymous ones.
- What if I report the same thing twice?
- Nothing bad happens. A second report of something already open is absorbed quietly, and you still get a confirmation.
- What exactly does a block cover?
- Messages, offers and buy-now, in both directions. The database enforces it rather than the interface hiding it, so there is no path around it.
- Can I unblock someone later?
- Yes. Everyone you have blocked is listed in your settings, and you can undo it there or from the conversation itself.
- Does anyone at Garage read my messages?
- Only when someone reports a conversation. Reporting one freezes a copy of the last 20 messages, so the report still makes sense if messages are deleted afterwards, and that copy is what a moderator opens. Nothing gives anyone live access to a chat.
- What can't be sold here?
- Anything dangerous, illegal or dishonest, and anything that isn't a physical thing you own. The rules page lists every category.
