garage is a local secondhand marketplace. buy and sell nearby, with no social network account required. it’s made in melbourne and it’s new, so the shelves are still filling up. your location never gets more precise than your suburb. there are no ads and no trackers, and nobody is selling you on.
selling a couch to somebody two streets away shouldn’t require an account on a social network, a profile that follows you around, or handing your address to a company that makes its money watching you. for a long time the only practical way to sell secondhand locally has been exactly that.
so garage is the boring alternative. a noticeboard for the stuff in your garage. it borrows the look of things a neighbourhood already trusts, like street signage and the post office, because that is closer to what it is than anything with a feed.
our terms say the same thing. garage is a noticeboard. we are not the seller. we connect local buyers and sellers, and the sale is between the two of you: the item, the price, the handover.
listing, browsing and messaging are free. there’s a short list of things that don’t belong here. the rules are one page and worth the minute.
as little as we can get away with. we hold your email, a display name, a suburb, and whatever you choose to list or say in chat. we don’t hold your address. we don’t hold your photos’ location data either, because that gets stripped on your device before anything is uploaded. we don’t sell or share any of it, there are no ad trackers, and the only analytics we run is cookieless and can’t be tied to you.

garage is built and run by garage marketplace pty ltd, an australian company based in melbourne (abn 69 700 370 172). it’s independent. no investors setting growth targets, no advertisers to keep happy.
melbourne first because that’s where we are, and because a marketplace for local pickup only works once there’s enough nearby to be worth the trip. suburb search runs on the gazetted locality list for every state and territory, so it works right across the country. it’s just thickest here for now.
there’s a real person on the other end of the contact form, and they read every message.
garage is young and the doors are open. a secondhand marketplace is only as good as the people on it, so we’re growing it slowly and watching who arrives while the trust and safety tools are still new.
it also means you’ll find rough edges and empty categories. if something’s broken or just annoying, tell us. the found a bug? link at the foot of every page goes straight to the people who can fix it. we self-audited the site against WCAG 2.2 level AA in july 2026 and publish what’s still outstanding on the accessibility page, unfinished parts included.

Garage is a marketplace of places. Every listing sits in a suburb, and every handover happens somewhere real. That ground is Country. People lived on it, cared for it and traded on it for tens of thousands of years before any of those suburbs appeared on a map, and it is the ground this marketplace still stands on.
